Americana ultra series
 50 ultras in 50 states
Before I’m 50 years old

What is an ultramarathon? A common question. Technically, it is any distance beyond 26.2 miles.  Races are typically run at a distance of either 50 kilometers (31.5 miles), 50 miles, 100 kilometers (62.2 miles), or 100 miles. Most events are on trails, sometimes technical, and often involving hilly or mountainous terrain. An ultramarathon is an extreme mental and physical challenge attempted only by those who either don’t know any better or know better but relish an extreme challenge.

I’ve run enough ultramarathons at this point that I can’t claim the defense of not knowing any better.  So, in the Fall of 2010, while out on a early morning run (when clarity of thought is supposedly heightened), I realized that I’m fast approaching 50 years old.  What better way to embrace this reality with a challenge of running 50 ultramarathons in 50 states!

The Americana Ultra Series is so named because I will be traveling across the country and witnessing small town americana at its best. With races like the Frozen Sasquatch, Peanut Island, Taterbug, Stump Jump, Cajun Coyote, and Mad Marsh, I haven’t been disappointed yet.  So far, I have been greeted warmly and met some very nice people everywhere I’ve been (see states completed). How this will turn out is anyone’s guess.  Stay tuned!
